Manitoba Trip and Fuel (IRP / IFTA) Permits

Single Trip Fuel Permit

Carriers based outside Manitoba that operate a qualified motor vehicle in Manitoba must be registered under IFTA or purchase a single trip permit for fuel tax purposes before entering Manitoba. A qualified motor vehicle is a motor vehicle used, designed or maintained for the transportation of persons or property and

1) has two axles and a gross vehicle weight or registered gross vehicle weight exceeding 11,797 kilograms (26,000 lbs.); or

2) has three or more axles regardless of weight; or

3) if used in combination with a trailer, has a combined weight that exceeds 11,797 kilograms (26,000 lbs).

Recreational vehicles are specifically excluded from the above definition. All motor vehicles that meet the above criteria must be registered under IFTA or travelling under a valid single permit for fuel tax purposes while in Manitoba. Failure to register under IFTA or obtain a single trip permit for fuel tax purposes will result in a fine.

Manitoba single trip fuel tax permits can be purchased by telephone from the Manitoba Infrastructure Permit Office at 204-945-3961 or Manitoba Toll Free 1-877-812-0009 or through the Automated Routing and Permitting System (ARPS). The Permit Office is open Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The fuel tax portion cost of a single trip permit is the greater of $18 or 6 cents per kilometer travelled or to be travelled in Manitoba. There may be additional costs depending on the load being transported into Manitoba.

Manitoba Overweight / Oversize Fines

Fines start at 13.20 Canadian for every 50 kilos of weight over gross or over a specific axle(group). The police officer can also request that weight be removed off the shipment immediately to make weight or get under a certain limit.

Warning Lights

A permittee or driver of a vehicle transporting a load that projects more than four inches beyond the overall width of the vehicle shall attach safety lighting during nighttime operation at the corners, and extremities of any extensions of protrusions of the load.

If the rear overhang is more than 4 ft and 2 ft or more wide, attach lights to the corners of the overhang; if less than 2 ft wide, a single light in the middle of the end of the overhang is required.

"Oversize Load" Banner
An “OVERSIZE LOAD” sign is to be displayed on the front and rear of the load vehicle.
A permittee shall display required “OVERSIZE LOAD” signs
that are: clearly visible from the vehicle’s front and rear. Size: 6 feet wide and 1 foot tall.
Letters: Black, 6 in. tall, with 1 in. stoke.

Flag Requirements

Specifications. Each warning flag attached to an overwidth or plastic at least 18 inches square and red or fluorescent orange in color. Permittee or driver of an overwidth or overlength special permitted vehicle and load combination shall display warning flags applicable to the permittee’s vehicle and load at the extreme corners of the load and at the farthest projections of the load beyond legal width limits.

Operate no earlier than one-half hour before sunrise and no later than one-half hour after sunset, exact daily times as defined under R17-6-101, unless the Department grants permit-specific alternate operation hours other than those listed under this subsection as a necessary condition to maintain highway safety

Manitoba Tire Regulations

Tires should measure at minimum 3/32”, though anything under 6/32″ is less than ideal for driving. If you need to check your tread depth in a pinch, but don't have a depth gauge you can use a traditional Canadian penny.

Manitoba Frost Laws

Restriction status: Active Zone 1 in effect since March 20, 2026. Zones 2, 3, 4, and 5 not before April 5, 2026. Coverage: Provincial highways only surfaced pavements across Climate Zones 15 as identified in the official SRR Order. Local roads not covered.

Manitoba Road Conditions

Construction workers put their lives at risk when working on the road. As drivers, we can help them stay safe on the job.

Speed limits are lower in designated construction zones, whether or not workers are present, and the fine for speeding is double the cost of a regular ticket.

Passing vehicles can pose a serious threat to workers who are focused on the job they’re doing.

Watch for workers on or near the roadway. Especially the flag person at the beginning of a construction zone.

The flag person helps control the flow of traffic through the area and you must follow their directions, including slowing down or stopping.

Keep plenty of space between you and the vehicle ahead so you can stop suddenly if necessary.
Slow down and be careful, so workers can get the job done safely and you can get to your destination.
